A former coal mining town, nestled in the Slate River Valley, once used as a summer residence by the Ute people, Crested Butte is now known as a destination for skiing, mountain biking, and outdoor activities among the West Elk Mountains. This sculpture captures the instantly recognizable and eponymous Crested Butte peak at 12,168 ft. just east of town, along with Mount Emmons aka "Red Lady" and Kebler Pass to the west, and Teocalli Mountain to the northeast.
